Surgical interference with pathways mediating responses conditioned to cortical stimulation.

چکیده
Cats trained to avoid a foot shock (US) when electrical stimulation (CS) was applied to homotopic areas on either the right or left marginal gyrus were subjected to various degrees of surgical isolation of the stimulated areas. For ten cats a U-shaped incision on one hemisphere isolated the stimulated area from most of the intracortical connections, and the contralateral area was undercut to eliminate direct corticifugal conduction. Postoperative tests showed a highly significant superiority in conditioned reflex (CR) level for stimulation of U-cut cortex. Cats with cortex undercut had to be retrained before a stable level of CR could be reestablished. Four other animals underwent bilateral undercutting of varying extents so that the reorganization could be more carefully evaluated. Trigeminal neurotomies and other controls were utilized. It is concluded that the electrically applied CS normally is elaborated principally via corticifugal fibers and if these fibers are cut, additional training is necessary before the intracortically conducted CS can become effective.

Effect of locus ceruleus phasic electrical stimulation on responses of barrel cortical cells to controlled mechanical displacement in rats
Behavioral and electrophysiological evidences have shown that locus ceruleus (LC) is involved in different tasks including modulation of sensory processing and shift of attention. In the present study, single unit responses of barrel cortical cells was recorded following controlled mechanical displacement of the principal and peripheral vibrissae in adult rats (100 trials of 200 µm deflection f...
متن کاملMEDIAN NERVE STIMULATION PO TENTIATES THE MU SCLE RESPONSES TO TRANS C RANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION
Motor responses evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation OMS) or transcranial electrical stimulation (TCS) can be facilitated by a prior conditioning stimulus to an afferent nerve. Two facilitation periods are described short (SI), when the nerve stimulus is given near 0 to 10 ms after cranial stimulation, and long (LI), when nerve stimulation is given 25-60 ms before the cranial stimula...
متن کاملResponses of primary somatosensory cortical neurons to controlled mechanical stimulation.
The results of psychophysical studies suggest that displacement velocity may contribute significantly to the sensation of subcortical somatosensory neurons. The cortical correlates of these phenomena, however, are not known. In the present study the responses of rapidly adapting (RA) neurons in the forelimb region of cat primary somatosensory cortex (SI) to controlled displacement of skin and h...
متن کاملIntracortical pathways mediate nonlinear fast oscillation (>200 Hz) interactions within rat barrel cortex.
Whisker evoked fast oscillations (FOs; >200 Hz) within the rodent posteromedial barrel subfield are thought to reflect very rapid integration of multiwhisker stimuli, yet the pathways mediating FO interactions remain unclear and may involve interactions within thalamus and/or cortex. In the present study using anesthetized rats, a cortical incision was made between sites representing the stimul...
متن کاملSelective activation of medial prefrontal-to-accumbens projection neurons by amygdala stimulation and Pavlovian conditioned stimuli.
Medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) neurons respond to Pavlovian conditioned stimuli, and these responses depend on input from the basolateral amygdala (BLA). In this study, we examined the mPFC efferent circuits mediating conditioned responding by testing whether specific subsets of mPFC projection neurons receive BLA input and respond to conditioned stimuli. In urethane-anesthetized rats, we iden...
